Independence Day is a national day of the Republic of India. On August 15, 1947, India gained independence from British rule. To commemorate that event, 15th August is celebrated as Independence Day in India every year.
India achieved independence after a long freedom struggle led mainly by non-violent, non-cooperation, and civil disobedience movements and violent movements by various extremist secret political societies. Just before independence, the British Indian Empire was partitioned on religious lines, resulting in the birth of the kingdoms of India and Pakistan. Communal riots during the partition caused heavy casualties. Many people lost their lives and more than 1.5 million people were displaced.
On August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the Indian national flag over the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi after being sworn in as India’s first Prime Minister.
